この本は本当に色んな人に読んでもらいので。
『9.11 生死を分けた102分 崩壊する超高層ビル内部からの驚くべき証言』（ジム・ドワイヤー、ケヴィン・フリン／文藝春秋）を読む。2001年９月11日。最初の飛行機が激突し、２棟目のビルが倒壊するまでの102分間を描いた本である。
まだ読了していない。だが、断言できる。この本は凄い本だ。
もし、いま他の本を読んでいたとしても、いったんその本を閉じなさい。そして、この本を手に取って読み始めるべきだ。あらゆる人に対して、そう断言できる一冊である。
あのとき、中がどういう状況だったのか。 人々は何を考え、どのように動いたのか。 そして外にいた人々や組織は、どのように動いていたのか。 情報はどのように動いていたのか。 何がどうなっていたのか。
訳者の三川基好氏による熱いまえがきがついているので、そちらを引用する。
……事件の分析となると、今さらという印象を受けるかもしれない。しかし、三年あまりを経て本書が世に問われたのには理由がある。広範囲な取材による膨大なデータに藻度突いていることがその第一だが、あのときあの建物の中で起きていたことを冷静に見きわめるにはこれだけの年月が必要だったというのも理由のひとつだ。
当初は警察官と消防士の献身的な活躍と痛ましい殉職のようすばかりが大きく伝えられ、英雄として祭りあげられていた傾向があった。また、あのように建物が粉微塵に崩れ落ちるのを見て、あの中にいた人の大半が犠牲になったような印象を与えていた。だが実は、飛行機の直撃を受けたフロアにいたり、それより上のフロアから身動きできなくなった犠牲者以外には、数多くの人々が建物の崩壊以前に避難を終えており、しかも人々はほとんど自力で、あるいは民間人の助けによって危険を脱していた。その上、殉職した消防士の中にかなりの数で、建物が崩壊の危機に瀕していることを知らずに、比較的低層階のフロアで休息をとっていた人たちがいた。きちんと情報が伝わっていれば犠牲にならずにすんだはずの人たちだった。

航空管制官は旅客機が同時に四機もハイジャックされたことを知らず、テロリストにハイジャックされた航空機を撃墜せよという副大統領の命令は戦闘機のパイロットに伝わらず、現場では建物が傾いてきたという上空の警察のヘリコプターからの連絡が消防関係者に伝わらなかった。市長ご自慢のハイテクで固めた危機管理センターが、同じワールドトレードセンターの敷地内にあったのだが、職員は最初の攻撃直後にそこから避難しなければならなかった。少なくとも片方のタワーには、航空機の突入したフロアを通って地上に避難する通路が残っていたのに、そのことはごく一部の人しか知らなかった。北タワーのロビーで指揮を執っていた消防局の幹部たちは、隣の南タワーが崩壊したことも知らずにいた。

このような冷徹な事実を、著者達は証言に証言を積み重ねることで示している。二百回以上におよぶ生存者やその家族・知人へのインタビュー、警察や消防の更新記録（はじめ当局は記録の公開をしぶったという）、電話の会話の記録などに基づいて、あのとき、あの建物の中で何が起きていたのかを明らかにしようという彼らの手法は、たとえば『史上最大の作戦』や『遠すぎた橋』で著者のコーネリアス・ライアンが採用したものだ。（中略）広い場所で数多くのできごとが同時進行で、しかも猛スピードで起きた場合、あとからその総体を理解しようとしたとき、この方法がもっとも有効だろう。
本書には全部で三百五十人以上の人物が登場するが、生存者へのインタビューに基づく部分が多いことから、その大半が無事避難できた人々であることが救いだ。だが、全員ではない。
つまり「大混乱だった」という一言で表現される状況が、 実際にどのようなものだったのか、点描で明らかにしている本だ。
公的な機関－－警察と消防のいさかい、そのほか機関の大混乱ぶり、なぜ無線が届かなかったのか、中からの問い合わせに対して「避難しろ」と一貫した答えが返せなかった理由はなぜか、といったこと等々も興味深いが、この本のポイントは、あの巨大ビルディングの中でそれまで普通の生活を送っていた人々が、大混乱の最中、どのようにふるまったか、そこにある。
テロやツインタワー云々以前の問題として、大災害が起きた直後、人々がどのように振る舞うのか。中には飛行機激突後、職場から即座に離れて下まで降りたのに、警備員に「こちらのタワーは大丈夫です」と言われ、また上まで戻ってしまった人もいる。そもそもあれだけの大きさのビルになると、飛行機が時速８７０ｋｍでぶつかってきたフロアにいた人と、そうじゃない場所にいた人とではまったく状況が異なる。もともと、毎日同じビルに通っていても、同じ職場以外では知り合いはいない。そういう状況で「何かは分からないが、とにかく大変なことが起きたらしい」と思ったときに、人々はどのようにふるまったのか。大勢の、様々な人々が登場する。ひたすら階段を下っていった人たち。閉じこめられたエレベーターの中にいた人たち。「動くな」と言われて、そのままフロアに留まった人たち。義務もないのに周囲の人々を助けた人たち。重装備をかついで何十回も階段を上っていった消防士たち。落下していく人々を為す術もなく見ていたヘリコプターのパイロットたち－－。102分間の群像ノンフィクション。
著者らはニューヨークタイムズの記者たち。とにかく読むことを強くおすすめしたい一冊である。
