住宅街を歩いていると、突然小さな電気屋があって、そこにはいちおうテレビや掃除機、冷蔵庫などが並べられているけれど店内には誰もいない。店番のおじさんおばさんの姿さえない。
そんな風景に出くわすことがあります。
また、元は小さな電気屋だったことを示す看板だけ残っている民家とか。
かつての高度経済成長期に豊かさの象徴だった家電。街中の小さな電気屋に並ぶわずかな点数の商品でさえ、当時は輝いていて、あこがれの象徴だったのでしょう。
いま、普通の人はまず電化製品は大型店に行って買うでしょうから、街の小さな電気屋さんの仕事はせいぜい修理の受付窓口程度しかありません。さびれていくのも道理です。
それを見ていて、書店は、かつて電気屋がたどった道を、いま歩いていこうとしているのではないかと思いました。
電化製品は既に、大型店舗か、輸入ものデザイン家電などを並べている中型店舗しか生き残っていないといってもいいでしょう。いまもまだ住宅街にぽつんと残る電気屋さんは、たぶん持ち家でしょうね。家賃がかからなければ、店を開いておくことくらいはできると。そんな感じで、商品の売り上げはほとんどなさそうです。
大型店舗か、中型のセレクトショップ。それしか残らなくなってしまったといったところが、書店とよく似てるなあと。
まー、それだけなんですけどね。
